Ben Gilmore is one of our stellar Ogden location team members. Recently, he took a new 2016 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 6Fattie out for a test ride on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail near the Ogden store.
What is a 6Fattie? These new Specialized bikes feature 650+ wheel and tire technology—that's a 650b wheel wearing a super-grippy 3.0 tire! Here’s what Ben had to say about his first 6Fattie experience:
I’ve been a mountain biker for more than 10 years. At this point, I’m rarely surprised by bikes that I ride. Well, I was certainly surprised by the 2016 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 6Fattie. It’s one of the raddest bikes I’ve ridden in a long time!
The large-volume tires offer traction and control in spades, while the short chainstays and aggressive geometry keep the bike playful and maneuverable. In addition, the ample suspension has your back when things get sketchy! I’ve never ridden something that is simultaneously so confidence-inspiring AND lively.
It absolutely rallies on descents—the gnarlier the better. During my first ride on the Stumpjumper 6Fattie, I actually scored PRs on downhills I’ve ridden 100’s of times. And the best part? I didn’t even feel like I was pushing myself or the bike!
It also claws up steep, rocky, and loose climbs with ease. In sections where I normally have to carefully pick my lines, I could just point and shoot. No fuss. No worries.
If you’re in the market for a new trail bike, I highly suggest giving a 6Fattie a try. They’re really something special!
You can stop by any Bingham Cyclery location to get set up on a 6Fattie test ride today! We have a wider range of 6Fattie bikes in stock in both hardtail (Fuse for men and Ruze for women) and full-suspension (Stumpjumper FSR for men and Rhyme FSR for women) models!
From beanies to baselayers to booties, Bingham Cyclery has you covered! Visit any location to create your cold-weather kit!
You know those loose switchback climbs you just never make it through? Prepare to send them with ease. Know that feeling of getting deflected off of rocks and struggling for control around corners or off-camber bits of trail? That feeling is in danger of being a memory of a distant past when trailbikes sported a pathetically narrow footprint. Why? The new 2016 Specialized STUMPJUMPER FSR 6fattie has arrived! I got a chance to ride one of these trailslayers yesterday on a 31-mile jaunt with about 3K of climbing, all on singletrack.
The bike has traction for weeks. It just clings to everything, and the confidence that follows is amazing. As I wriggled the bike through tight trees and turns, an analogy occurred to me that will resonate with the skiers among you, particularly those who’ve been around for a while. Remember going from a skinny ski to a true fat ski? Remember the feeling of confidence you had through powder or chop? This is that bike. It rolls through rough terrain effortlessly, and with its beefy 3.0” tires, it climbs better than it has any business doing.
During the ride yesterday, I passed a few riders, and as I came up on them, one thing really stood out. These were not racers, just riders out having fun, and I felt bad for them. They didn’t need anorexic race machines; they needed the bike I was on. I watched them bounce off rocks and sketch out in off-camber sections. Meanwhile, I just rode comfortably behind them, rolling over the rough terrain smoothly and with more traction than I have ever felt on a trail bike. After 25+ years riding bikes, that’s a big statement. I realized that a lot of riders could benefit from a bike like this.
Bottom line: the 2016 Specialized STUMPJUMPER FSR 6fattie opens up the sweet spot and is just plain fun to ride. Check one out today at one of our 4 locations in Sandy, Salt Lake City, Sunset or Ogden.

Why close at 5pm on Thursday, you ask? To gather as employees, friends and customers alike to ride bikes! We hate to think that this closure presents an inconvenience to some, but we hope that our intent is obvious, to put our love of bike rides into practice with those that support us in our stores. Friend us on Facebook for ride info and specials and hopefully we can share some trail or pavement together this season.
